About the Silver City
Surfers

You have just become a
grandparent but your son or daughter stays in
another city or even abroad and you really want
to see your new born grandchild.
You could congratulate them by
telephone, but that still doesn't let you see
your new grandchild.Your son or daughter
suggests that if you can give them an email
address, they will email you an attachment with
photos of your new grandchild.
What's an email?
I don't have an email
address
What's an attachment?
I don't have a computer
Where will I find a computer?
Even although I found a
computer, I wouldn't know how to use it
I might break the
computer
I'm too old for such
things
Most people before coming to
see us for the first time think the same thing.
Then you remember somewhere
seeing a poster about a place that could help
you. Now where was that? Oh yes that place at
the Citadel, Aberdeen, Silver City something.
Silver City Surfers, that's right. But you are
nervous about meeting new people, and what about
the cost, and all those tests and exams you have
to sit before they will let you near one of
their computers.
That may be other places, but
not Silver City Surfers Internet Café. All of our
facilities are FREE. Our volunteers will show
you the way around the keyboard and computer.
They will help you to set up your email address
and show you how to send and receive emails, and
most important how to send and receive that
attachments of your grandchild. Later if you
wish our volunteers will show you how to find
you way around the Internet (this is called
Surfing). Or show you how to do online shopping
or book a holiday online. The opportunities are
endless.
And because there are no tests
or exams, you can learn at your own pace
whatever you feel comfortable doing, and the
volunteers will help you with the parts you are
unsure about. You don't have to be nervous about
coming to see us. Silver City Surfers Internet
Café is just your normal drop-in centre and if
you're 55 years and over, you're invited. And
when you are not surfing or sending, you can sit
in our hospitality area and have some
refreshment where you will quickly make new
friends.
Drop-in for an Informal
Chat...
Since we opened our doors in
January 2005, we have seen many people gain
basic skills in the use of computers. This new
found confidence has encouraged older people to
take advantage of the facilities available in
the Libraries, and in Community Centres. Others
have even gone on to take courses at college. It
is always a pleasure to see our users gaining
knowledge within an environment which is both
friendly and relaxing. Silver City Surfers
Internet Cafe is a drop-in centre for older
people. We cater for anyone aged 55 and over, who
has little experience of computers. Still unsure
about what to expect? Come along and see for
yourself. Our volunteers are experienced and
friendly and they will work at your
pace!
Our Funders
Silver City Surfers are grateful to the
following for funding:
- Donations made by individuals when making
use of our service
Silver City Surfers is a small
self-funded community group fully managed by
volunteers and staffed mainly by volunteers. We
are committed to providing a free service for
over 55's. We do need to find funding
every year for our city centre sessions. Without
funding we would be unable to meet the cost of
the lease for use of the computer suite and
hospitality area within the Salvation Army
Citadel.
Information on possible
funding streams and personal or company
donations are always welcome and can be made at
any session in the city centre or by contacting
us at silvercitysurfers@googlemail.com |
